What is psoriasis? It is a non-contagious autoimmune disease that causes an overgrowth of skin cells that is dry, thick and scaly. Itchiness and redness often go hand in hand with affected areas of psoriasis. The cause of psoriasis can be genetics (hereditary) or triggered by an environmental factor.
A few common triggers of psoriasis include stress, excessive smoking and/or alcohol consumption, climate change and so on. Here are a few essential oil blends that may help provide relief for psoriasis. Combine 2 teaspoons of carrier oil with 2 drops of essential oils (1% dilution) once a day at night.
(E.g. 2 teaspoons argan/coconut oil/other carrier oil + 1 teaspoon lavender + 1 teaspoon peppermint)
Carrier oils such as argan oil and coconut oil are best for psoriasis as they are both able to moisturize the skin, soften the scales while their anti-inflammatory properties reduces inflammation and pain. It is better to play safe by using essential oils sparingly and diluting it more to prevent further irritation.
Lavender + Peppermint
Lavender’s soothing nature and anti-inflammatory properties makes it a multipurpose oil to soothe insomnia, bug bites as well as inflammation that tends to go hand in hand with psoriasis. Peppermint’s main chemical components – menthol and menthone, provide a cooling sensation to provide pain relief and is believed to have anti-septic abilities.
Tea Tree + Rose Absolute
Tea tree oil is a gentle yet powerful anti-septic and anti-microbial. Other than eliminating harmful bacteria on skin, it soothes inflammation and promotes wound healing. Rose absolute’s emollient properties are reputed to address multiple skin concerns such as fine lines and wrinkles, dullness, scars and dryness.
Geranium + Frankincense
Geranium can address multiple skin ailments and concerns such as contact dermatitis, eczema, fungal infections, psoriasis, rosacea and more. Frankincense’s ability to stimulate skin cell renewal helps with softening and loosening the scales of psoriasis gently. It is also good for promoting healing of scars and eliminating harmful bacteria on the skin.
Helichrysum + Palmarosa
Just like frankincense, helichrysum can help with skin cell renewal for smoother and brighter looking skin. It is also good for bacterial infections and ringworms. Palmarosa is a balancing oil that would benefit both very dry and very oily skin. It helps with dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, acne, sores and more.
Although essential oils are naturally derived, they are extremely potent and potentially irritating if misused such as using too much or using undiluted. Make sure to carry out a patch test before proceeding with using any essential oil. If any irritation occurs, discontinue use and seek professional help.
Make sure not to pick at the scales as it can cause infections and worsen the condition. When in doubt, it is also ideal to consult with a medical professional, especially if you are pregnant, nursing or have other existing medical conditions. While essential oils may offer assistance, they are definitely no substitute for professional or medical advice.
