Essential Oils for Arthritis

Arthritis is a medical condition where chronic pain is caused by the inflammation of one or more joints. It can also be developed from an old injury in the past that was not treated properly. Here is a list of essential oils that may help provide pain relief for arthritis based on research and studies. Make sure to combine them with suitable carrier oil.

Frankincense

Not just any type of frankincense essential oil, specifically frankincense frereana/boswellia frereana. Based on a 2010 study, frankincense frereana/boswelia frereana does appear to be promising in terms of preventing collagen degradation and preventing inflammation which is beneficial for arthritis or other forms of inflammation.

Lavender

Lavender essential oil is well reputed to be calming, addressing issues such as nerves, insomnia and headaches. However, a randomised clinical trial in 2016, although further evidence and more extensive research is required, does show that lavender has the potential to help with arthritis pain.

Chamomile

Chamomile essential oil is well known to be healing, with history tracing back to ancient Egypt. Chamomile essential oil does contain an abundance of multiple flavonoids that have beneficial properties such as antioxidants and anti-inflammatory, that may help with addressing arthritis pain.

Cedarwood

Apart from its aroma that can keep pesky bugs at bay while soothing the senses, cedarwood essential oil contains anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic properties that can reduce pain associated with arthritis, muscle soreness and stiffness. It is an emmenagogue so those with blood disorders should avoid using cedarwood essential oil.

Cypress

Cypress has been long used to treat multiple ailments. It goes as far back as Ancient Greece, the Greek physician, Hippocrates is said to use its oil in his bath for health purposes. When incorporated in an aromatherapy massage, its soothing nature is known to address aches and pains.

Pine

Pine essential oil possesses anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties that will not only help manage inflammation, but provide some pain relief as well. If topical application is a no-go, it is also use in your diffuser to invigorate and energize your senses while deodorising your indoor space.

Rosemary

The herb is brilliant to add to cooking whereas the oil is often used for aromatherapy for heightened cognitive function, fatigue and headaches. When applied topically, one can benefit from its anti-inflammatory, analgesic and carminative properties to help with muscle and joint pain, bloating and constipation.
