How to Group Essential Oils by Purpose

Essential oils stimulate the part of our brain that processes emotions and memory, also known as the limbic system, via airborne or aromatherapy. They can promote relaxation which in turn can improve our mood and sleep quality, they can also do the opposite and energize us to give us a boost of energy and improve focus, improving general well-being.

With the array of choices we currently have, it can be challenging to pick the right essential oil. Before choosing, it is important to know your goals and priorities:

You may find it easier to decide by narrowing down the options based on the characteristics of their scent profile. For example, if you’re feeling sluggish, nauseous or anxious, you’ll want to reach for either something minty (peppermint, spearmint, wintergreen etc.) or citrusy (lemon, orange, tangerine etc.)

Minty and citrusy scents are generally liked by many, if not most people, therefore it is a good if you’re looking to diffuse it in an enclosed space such an office. Furthermore, its refreshing nature is excellent for deodorizing stale or stuffy indoor spaces, facilitating easier breathing (that can also help with allergies) and uplifting negative moods.

Essential oils that is categorized as herbaceous such as clary sage, hyssop and rosemary, as well as spicy such as cardamom, clove and coriander, are known to be stimulating. Therefore, they are great to use for stimulating a deeper sense of focus whether it’s for study, yoga, meditation or spiritual practices.

On the other side of the spectrum, if you’re looking for an essential oil that will promote relaxation, alleviate some degree of stress and induce an earlier onset of sleep, you’ll want to reach for either resins (benzoin, frankincense, peru balsam etc) or floral (chamomile, geranium, lavender etc.)

If you’re looking for something romantic and sensual, some woody scents such as patchouli, sandalwood and vetiver as well as some floral scents such as jasmine, rose, ylang ylang have been reputed for its aphrodisiac properties. It’s no wonder all these oils are popular bases in perfumery.

Despite the grouping, several categories of essential oils do overlap. For example, the “balsamic” category, essential oils that are categorized as balsamic are known to exude a sweet, warm and earthy aroma with spicy undertones. Essential oils that fit into this category are amyris, balsam fir, cedarwood, copaiba balsam and myrhh just to name a few.

Remember that essential oils are for external use only. Never ingest them even if the label says it is safe to do so. You may also consult in a medical professional or a qualified aromatherapist for a second or third opinion, and/or if you have a medical condition or are pregnant/nursing.
